Can Macs get viruses ?

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

This was brought to my attention a while back about a pc customer of mine whom was thinking of switching to mac. I got to say i think macintosh is the most secure operating system right next to linux. Therefore people assume naturally that macintoshs do not get viruses. Well i am here to tell you today that that is completely wrong.

A few reasons why macintosh don’t have as many viruses as pcs:

  • Some of the newer versions of osx use a unix kernal which is the most secure system around.
  • Microsoft Windows is a good chunk of the pc market therefore pc hackers would make viruses because most of the market is on pc.

So when your thinking about switching to mac which i am not putting down i think they are great computers if:

You buy apple care and only use compatible mac programs currently on your pc. Meaning some of the computer games you may or may not play.

You have important information you’d like kept more secure.

But granted its all how you use windows. If you are not downloading and you have updated virus protection, spyware protection, malware and adware protection which all together wouldn’t be that much.
